Tool Talk
Spring Planting 2009

As planting season rapidly approaches, we took a moment to talk with some Master Service Technicians to get a few words of wisdom. Often we find ourselves running into problems with the initial setup of equipment, which turns out causing unnecessary and costly down time. We designed this portion of the site with you, the Customer, in mind. We wanted to share common setup practices and other scenarios our technician have run into.

"Guys running the 8030 series tractors with mounted planters need to make sure and set their rock shaft to lowest set point at the bottom of the rock shafts travel. Which is best done before hitching up to the planter or other mounted piece of equipment with gauge wheels. This will ensure that your implements stay on the ground while traveling over contours in the field."...Jeff Ludeke

"Singulation + Spacing + Agronomic Factors + Mother Nature = Good Yields! For the most part, we can control 2.5 of these variables. Take some time to evaluate each area. The results will amaze you!

For those of you with SeedStar/VRD systems, here are some things to remember.

1. Always attach case drain hose First. Which is the yellow capped hose with flat face. This will potentially eliminate motor seal failure.

2. If using SCV's, energize VRD/VAE/CCS fans by clicking forward. When shutting down, move ahead and down into float, allowing the motors to coast down.

3. When planting in fields which require you to stop at the ends, remember to gear down prior to stopping. Start off in a lower gear and gear up to field speed. This simple operation tip will alleviate narrow spaced crops when stopping and widely spaced crops when starting.

4. Remember that the VRD system requires a radar input from tractor, wheel motion sensor input from planter, planter height position down, and you have hydraulic power. Look around at sensor plugs, harnesses, etc. before panicking. Its usually something simple that disables the VRD system"....Blaine Jelden
